Yes, there really was a Helvi! She ran the legendary Husky Truck Stop kitchen in Lively and served delicious, home-style food to hungry travellers on their way east or west on Highway 17. She then launched Helvi’s Catering back in the late 70s to serve even more delicious food to hungry customers at weddings, business events, and just about everywhere else you can imagine – Helvi’s Catering has always had a focus on going above and beyond for their customers on service, and of course, amazing food.
Helvi’s son, Ed Thurston learned to love food then went away to culinary school and completed his apprenticeship at the prestigious Westin Hotel in downtown Edmonton. While in Alberta, Ed also worked at Chateau Lake Louise and the esteemed Edmonton Petroleum Club. He returned to his hometown of Lively in 1994 to run the family catering business. He deftly melds home-style favourites with a gourmet touch that will please every palate, from the comfort food fanatic to the globe-trotting gastronome, and every person in between.
Ed has received the Award of Distinction from the Sudbury Mayor’s Office, won a medal as a member of the Alberta Junior Culinary Team, and holds his Interprovincial Red Seal Chef designation. Whether it is working with local businesses, on movie sets, or with budding brides, Helvi’s is dedicated to service, and upholding a family tradition of quality and pride.
Helvi’s brings high-end food down to earth – tasty, served fresh and hot, with a smile, just about anywhere. If you’ve got a special request, don’t be shy to ask. Helvi’s loves a challenge and are happy to go outside of Sudbury (on occasion even out into the wilderness!) to satisfy their clients’ needs.
Other caterers might get food to your table – but Helvi’s will get GREAT food to your table, no matter where it is.
If you’ve got a challenge or a problem, we’ve probably seen it, and have a way to solve it. We are dedicated to working with our customers to make events successful and memorable. Helvi’s has been in the catering game for a long time and we’ve learned a thing or two.
